- The Greek lowercase letter sigma has two different forms: σ 03c3 and ς 03c2. The latter form is used when the sigma is the last letter of a word.
- The micro prefix µ 00b5 is distinct from the Greek lowercase letter mu μ 03bc.
- A distinct Unicode character exists for the physical resistance unit Ohm: Ω 2126, but its use is deprecated in the Unicode standard (see https://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U2100.pdf) in favor of the Greek uppercase letter omega Ω 03a9 listed above.
- The summation symbol ∑ 2211 is distinct from the Greek uppercase letter sigma Σ 03a3.

- The hyphen-minus character 002d is widely used as a minus sign (e.g., in programming languages) even though a distinct minus sign 2212 exists in Unicode.
- The figure dash character 2012 has the same width as digit characters.
- The horizontal bar character 2015 is used to introduce quoted text.
